When tragic circumstances leave Autumn alone and on her own out in the woods, she follows her parents' secret path to the nearest town for mending work, doing the best a girl of then fourteen can to sustain herself in the now lonely woods. Her only friend and companion is a little downy woodpecker she has named Spid.

On one of her return trips from the town, Autumn unexpectedly encounters a bizarre old woman in the woods. The woman, Abicanazer, provides Autumn, for a time, a friend and teacher, knowledge, choices, and a not-to-be-forgotten larger, wily woodpecker named Spat, who had, for a time, accompanied the unusual old woman.

Autumn sets to work to change her life. Though still alone, she has the unending antics of Spid and Spat to lighten her days. Autumn chooses her path, and for years she lovingly spends her days at her new craft to earn her living. She diligently remembers and follows the old woman's counsel, and her life, though at times still lonely, has found meaning.

If she only knew what answering the knock on her door one early spring day would mean. Caterina Sikwedg and her cunning mother, the great Lady Sikwedg, have traveled far to obtain something—something they must have from Autumn—. With the two deceiving Autumn, Spid and Spat find they have to work fast to attempt to remedy the pair's evil doings.

As a result of the birds' actions, Autumn, scared and completely at a loss, will find herself brought before the King and his council, and it is only then she will understand, with horror, the deceit the Sikwedg's have perpetrated and just what is at stake...
